1988 Ford Mustang Poor Man's EV AKA Robo-Car

Well this project is a unique project in and of itself in that it takes something destined for the scrap heap and gives it new life in a new way.  This car started off as a common 1988 Mustang with a 4 cyl engine.  It was a work in progress, soon to be ready for the road.  Unfortunately the ole lady decided to drive the thing down the road to a friends house, and not paying attention, flipped the damned thing into a ditch, totally trashing the car.

This is where the moniker "Robo-car" came in.  If any of you remember the movie "Robo-Cop", where Murphy, the main character, who was an ordinary cop, gets shot totally to shit by thugs, and who for all intents was beyond dead, was taken and rebuilt by scientists and resurrected as a cyborg to serve a new purpose in his life.  Well, this is synonymous to this vehicle, since this car was totaled and resurrected to serve a new purpose in life as well.

For any of you readers that have frequented this site over the last few years, you may have remembered my doing an EV project using the 69 Mustang as well as the 69 Falcon that is in the fleet as donor vehicles for the project.  Well The EV hardware went from the Mustang to the Falcon when I decided to turn the 69 Mustang into a 6 cyl daily driver.  Well after the 88 Mustang was wrecked, I decided to take the EV hardware out of the Falcon and put it in the 88 Mustang since for all intents, there really wasn't much else that could be done with the chassis other than scrap.  At this point however, the project has been quickly and successfully completed, creating a base EV that has already been pressed into use several times already for the purposes that would be suitable for such a vehicle out where we are.  I'm by all means not done with the car, as there's more odds and ends to do to it, but the basic EV chassis is done and in service.

We'll keep a timeline of project progress to make it easier to follow the car's construction.  For more details/pictures, just go to the project timeline page.

If you want it built right, build it yourself.
